Found mercury in 10 out of 47 whitening cream samples. Those brands have not registered with FDA, thus they don't exist in FDA database.

On 16 Aug. 12, Jutamas Subpradit, Burananives Foundation Analyses, reveal the study result on the Mercury and Whitening Cream Project that 10 out of 47 samples contain high level of mercury (99,070 ppm). According to FDA, Thailand Ministry of Health and Asian Cosmetics Standard, mercury is prohibited to use in cosmetics (0 ppm).

She adds that the label of those samples show the incorrect information neither. Especially, they do not have FDA number which means that they don't exist in FDA database. Thus it is difficult for the FDA to track down those manufacturers.

"Many of those samples that we found mercury had been caught by FDA before. Apparently they are still in the market."

She continues that this study does not only show us how much the mercury is used but also show us that the mercury can be found in the cheap products as well as in those expensive ones. So it is difficult for the consumer to make a sound judgement base on price alone.

Miss Sirinna Petcharat, from The Consumer Community in Suratthani Province said that those whitening cream mentioned are available everywhere in Suratthani even in the open-air market. They keep changing brand names which make it difficult for the authority to track them down. Normally those brands are incorrectly labelled. And people normally assume that since they are openly available they must have been checked by the Authorities. Of course, it is a wrong assumption.

Mercury is a very popular whitening agent. Because it can whiten the skin dramatically fast and it is cheap. But mercury is toxic. It can accumulate in the body. With only little amount of mercury can weaken the skin and make the skin over sensitive to the light which lead to irritation and hyper-pigmentation.
